Nsc 2025: Kwazulu-Natal Climbs To Top As National Pass Rate Reaches Record 88%
NSC 2025: KwaZulu-Natal Climbs to Top as National Pass Rate Reaches Record 88%
South Africa’s education sector has reached a historic milestone following the release of the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, with the national pass rate rising to an all-time high of 88%.
The announcement was made on 12 January by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, who confirmed that the matric class of 2025 delivered the strongest performance in the history of the NSC examinations.
KwaZulu-Natal Takes First Place
KwaZulu-Natal emerged as the top-performing province in 2025, achieving a 90.6% pass rate, up from 89.5% in 2024. The improvement saw the province move from second place in 2024 to first place nationally.
The Free State, which topped the rankings in 2024, dropped to second position with a 89.33% pass rate, despite remaining above the national average.
Provincial Rankings for 2025
The provincial performance rankings for the 2025 NSC examinations are as follows:
KwaZulu-Natal – 90.6%
Free State – 89.33%
Gauteng – 89.06%
North West – 88.49%
Western Cape – 88.2%
Northern Cape – 87.79%
Mpumalanga – 86.55%
Limpopo – 86.15%
Eastern Cape – 84.17%
Notably, the Northern Cape recorded one of the most significant improvements, moving from ninth place in 2024 to sixth place in 2025, reflecting steady progress in learner outcomes.
Mixed Movements Across Provinces
While several provinces showed improvement, others experienced slight declines in ranking. Limpopo dropped from sixth to eighth place, while the Eastern Cape moved down one position to ninth, despite maintaining a pass rate above 84%.
Gauteng, North West, Western Cape, and Mpumalanga maintained consistent positions compared to 2024, demonstrating stability in their education systems.
Focus Beyond Pass Rates
The Department of Basic Education emphasised that while the improved pass rate is encouraging, continued focus is needed on:
Subject quality, particularly Mathematics and Sciences
Reducing dropout rates
Ensuring equal access to resources across rural and urban schools
Minister Gwarube highlighted that the department’s priority remains preparing learners not only to pass, but to succeed in higher education, training, and the job market.
Supporting Learners After Matric
Learners can access ongoing matric support services on thecms.co.za, including:
Matric results updates
University application tracking
Access to university prospectuses
Bursary and funding opportunities
As the Class of 2025 moves forward, the results signal both progress made and the work that still lies ahead in strengthening South Africa’s education system.

Matric Results News
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that the 2025 Matric (NSC) results will be published in accredited newspapers on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. The results will be released in the same format used in recent years, showing only examination numbers and results. No names, surnames, or ID numbers will be included to protect learners’ personal information.
This announcement follows ongoing legal developments involving the Information Regulator. Although the regulator previously issued a notice in 2024 stopping the publication of matric results in newspapers, a full bench of the Pretoria High Court ruled in December that results may be published using examination numbers, as has been done since 2022. The regulator has now applied for leave to appeal that ruling.
The DBE explained that it is legally required to continue publishing the results in a pseudonymised format based on a court order issued on 18 January 2022, which is still in force. The department believes that publishing results in newspapers remains an important and accessible way for learners and parents to receive results on time, while still protecting personal information.
The department also confirmed that it will oppose the regulator’s application to appeal, saying this is in the best interests of learners and the education sector. At the same time, the DBE stressed that it respects the role of the Information Regulator and remains committed to the law, learner protection, transparency, and accessibility. The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, and Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule will officially announce the 2025 Matric results on Monday, 12 January 2026.
